Koi carp

Cyprinus carpio

Koi carp are the national fish of Japan. The koi is a refined version of the common carp. Koi have been farmed for thousands of years and are therefore not particularly afraid of humans. The fish live for about 15 - 35 years. Koi are omnivorous and eat everything from meat to plants. Koi carp do not have visible teeth, they have fayngeal teeth, which means that they are located far back in the throat, past the gills.
