The black-tipped reef shark is one of the reef’s most elegant inhabitants. It can be recognized by the black tips on its fins, as if someone had dipped them in ink before it set out into the ocean.

It lives in warm tropical waters and likes to stay close to coral reefs, where there is plenty of small fish to hunt. Blacktip reef sharks are a bit like the ocean’s security guards. By hunting certain fish, they help keep the reef in balance. Without predators, the ecosystem would quickly become more chaotic than a Friday afternoon at an ice cream parlor. Blacktip reef sharks are often cautious and curious rather than aggressive.

🦈 Can grow up to 1.6 meters long.
🦈 They usually live 10–15 years in the wild.
🦈 The female gives birth to live young and usually has 2–4 pups per litter. The gestation period varies between 8 and 16 months, depending on where the shark lives.
🦈 Thanks to its curious and relatively fearless behavior, it is often the first shark that divers and snorkelers encounter at tropical coral reefs.
