Swallowtail & Birdwing

Swallowtails are large, colorful butterflies in the family Papilionidae and include

over 550 species. Swallowtails are found all over the world, except in the Arctic. They are

is named after the characteristic tail-like extensions

on the hind wings, although many species lack a tail. Many swallowtails

have brilliant colors, such as dazzling metallic shimmers, making

this group to a favorite among butterfly enthusiasts.

What does a swallowtail look like?

Some of the world's largest and most spectacular butterflies are found in this

butterfly group. These magnificent butterflies have velvety black wings with

lines, fields or spots in dazzling blue, green or red. These butterflies'

beauty and inaccessibility (many live in remote areas or fly

at high altitudes) make them some of the most sought-after butterflies

among entomologists.
