We at Butterfly House have just returned from an unforgettable trip to Michoacán, Mexico, where we had the privilege of witnessing two of nature's most fascinating wonders: the spectacular overwintering of monarch butterflies and the encounter with the unique, endemic axolotls.
Monarch butterflies are known for their incredible migration, one of the world's most impressive natural phenomena. Every year, millions of monarchs fly over 4000 kilometers from Canada and the United States to the mountainous forests of Mexico, where they spend the winter in a cooler and protected climate. These butterflies gather in large numbers on tree trunks and branches, their orange wings creating an almost magical sight. During our trip, we had the opportunity to hike in several protected butterfly reserves and experience this spectacle up close. Standing surrounded by thousands of monarchs fluttering in the air is a feeling that is hard to describe in words - a true tribute to the power and beauty of nature.
As if the monarch butterflies weren't enough, we came across another incredible creature in a small stream near one of the butterfly areas: the axolotl. These unique salamanders, found only in certain parts of Mexico, are an evolutionary curiosity. Axolotls live their entire lives in water and have the ability to regenerate their body parts, something that has fascinated scientists around the world. Seeing them in their natural environment was an unexpected and unforgettable addition to our trip.
The trip to Michoacán has not only given us memories for life, but also new inspiration for our work at the Butterfly House. The migration of monarch butterflies and the vulnerable existence of axolotls remind us of the importance of conserving and protecting nature's wonders. We hope to share these experiences with our visitors and inspire more people to get involved in the environment.
Thanks for joining us on our adventures, and stay tuned for more stories from the natural world here on the blog!
