The butterfly house in Costa Rica

In September 2024, the Butterfly House was in Costa Rica and met various projects on site such as butterfly farms we work with and various marine projects

Whale shark (Rhincodon typus)

such as the tagging of sharks and their migration to the southern Costa Rican coasts where we have Golfito as a port of departure. They are working hard to ban and regulate commercial fishing, especially during periods when different species move into bays and fjords. It's not only fish that need help and protection, but also other animals such as whales and turtles. From time to time, we have to remove and help individuals that have become entangled in old fishing gear and debris.

We had to go and rescue a turtle that got stuck

We visited Tortugero in the north of Costa Rica on the Caribbean side where we learned about various programs for the protection of sea turtles. Here we also went up the Rio San Juan and the Colorado River, which originates in Lake Nicaragua. It is a rather unique phenomenon that occurs here annually with bull sharks migrating up the river and spending long periods in the lake. Sawfish and tarpon also migrate up to the lake and are able to live in freshwater. These are amazing places with a biodiversity to celebrate. However, you should remember to keep an eye on the crocodiles, which are both large and numerous. It may be wise to avoid the occasional snake species, but on the whole it is a paradise to enjoy.
